Menglee SHG begins manufacturing sanitary napkins, Govt to set up vending machines at schools

NAMCHI, 15 Feb: A team of government officials visited a unit manufacturing sanitary napkins established by Jyoti Self Help Group at Menglee, South Sikkim, yesterday.
Jyoti SHG members were sponsored in December to train at Swaminathan Research Foundation in Pondicherry to learn how to set up a sanitary napkin production unit. The training was supported by SRDA/ RM&DD, South District, under the SGSY program.

Project Director, SRDA, LP Chettri, Deputy Secretary-Sanitation, Yishey D Yongda, President, Women’s Hygiene ExNoRa from Chennai, S Jayaraman, Sr. Extension Officer, SRDA [South District], PL Basnett, along with local Panchayat Secretary, Gopi D Pokhrel  and executive members from Pacific Club interacted with the Jyoti SHG members.
During the discussion Deputy Secretary, Sanitation said that the state government is providing a vending machine to government Senior Secondary schools where senior girl students can buy a sanitary napkin for just Rs. 2.
Mr. Jayraman, while interacting with the SHG members, congratulated them on the quality of their product, remarking that the quality was much better than the sanitary napkins available in the market at much higher costs.
He also suggested that three SHG members could take a short training at Chennai to familiarise themselves to the latest technology in production.
A formal inauguration and product launching program of the said unit will be held shortly, Mr. Chettri informed. It was also decided by the Project Director and Sr. Extension Officer SRDA to make the Unit a resource centre so that interested SHGs could train here.
The unit at Menglee has been set up on a rented accommodation and production has begun.
