Majhitar needs Immediate Solution

Letter:
It has been more than a decade since the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology was set up at Majhitar and subsequently it became the educational hub of the State. The Himalayan Pharmacy institute also came up here and the volume of business in the area started rising. More and more houses were built with a marked increase in population.
Now, Majhitar is facing a wide range of problems, viz. bad road conditions at Lower Majhitar, no street lights, no drainage system, no garbage dumping yards for households, hotels and shops, no proper water supply system.

Majhitar residents have requested the government to solve these problems a number of times which we have been facing for many years. However, no step has been taken by the government and the problems remain unsolved.
When SMIT was being set up, they had used the lower Majhitar road which was already damaged at the time, now, neither the government nor SMIT looks after this road. This road which was previously a national highway is still not carpeted and till date nothing has been done to patch it up. During the monsoons the residents of the area cannot even walk on this road because rain water floods the entire road also causing severe health hazards for the people of the area.
Street lights were installed all over Majhitar leaving this lower belt. Now the residents are facing a lot of problems because of the lack of street lights. A lot of thefts are also reported in the area which could be prevented with proper lighting of the area. We are trying our best to improve our area by spreading awareness amongst the public and even the students of Manipal, but no improvement is taking place.
Majhitar also needs a proper drainage system, as the sewage from each and every household goes to a small hole and then it produces many diseases.
Shortage of water is another major problem for the public here. Industries have their own water supply line and so does SMIT while the public of Majhitar have no alternative.
Besides all these, what Majhitar needs is a garbage collection system. After so many requests, a garbage dump was installed but because of shortage of these dustbins we can see garbage lying around the area which makes Majhitar unhygienic.
We, the like-minded people, are really working hard to make Majhitar and West Pendam constituency a tourism spot but these are the hurdles which are still not solved by the government even after so many requests. The government encourages so many industries to be set up in this area but for this NH31A zone remains underdeveloped.
We request the concerned department, our area MLA and our beloved Chief Minister to take this matter seriously so that we, the public of Majhitar can step forward for new ideas.
Suresh K. Lama, On Behalf of Majhitar (West Pendam Constituency Public)
