North addresses challenge of addiction

MANGAN, 26 June: Anti Drug Abuse Day was observed here in the North District headquarter town today with an awareness rally taken out through town.
The programme was chaired by Sr. SP (N), BK Tamang, and lso attended by SDM [Mangan], BK Lama, DFO (T), S Saring, Deputy Labour Commissioner, KR Limboo, DHEO (N), YN Sharma, PI Mangan, R Tamang, Mangan Nagar Panchayat President KJ Bhutia and councilors, representatives of Malling Youth Club, Nav Yuva Samiti [Rangrang], Anjuman Islamia, Youth Welfare Association, Mangan Local Taxi Drivers Association, Panchayats, members of the business community, Truck Drivers Association and local youth.

A local youth, Namgyal Lepcha, shared his brush with addiction and underlined the horrors of his experience to reinforce why the young need to be saved from addiction.
The Senior SP, while briefing the gathering on addiction in North Sikkim, highlighted that while addiction levels were still low in Mangan, it has noticeable increased in Lachung and stressed that public awareness on these matters needs to be raised.
