Plantation drive held at Enchey Monastery


GANGTOK, 28 June: With the aim to raise awareness on rising pollution and to encourage tree plantations to tackle natural calamities, one such effort was held at the Enchey Monastery here today.
The plantation drive, led by KN Topgay, Mayor, Gangtok Municipal Corporation [GMC] was joined by monks of the monastery, people of Chandmari ward, members of Makhmali Self Help Group, and representatives of Gyonten Yargay Kiduk. The drive started early in the morning and planted Rhododendron, Chaap, Guava, Apple, Pine and other saplings.

Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said, “We should also look forward to preserving our jhoras and waterfalls in parallel to being involved in plantation drives as to decrease any chances of landslides and any other natural calamity.” The Mayor stressed on reducing use of plastics bags in and around the capital.
The programme started with the Mayor planting an Apple sapling at the Enchey Gompa premises. The programme was followed by discussions and exchange of views concerning conservation and control measures of jhoras and pollution of waterfalls.
The Mayor further thanked the participants for showing a keen interest in organizing the plantation drive.
