ASSWO joins public spat over SU

GANGTOK, 21 July: Another organization has joined issue with the string of comments coming forth on Sikkim University. The All Sikkim Students Welfare Organization has expressed disappointment over the public spat centered around Sikkim University between various organizations and political outfits. “Instead of becoming a cauldron of knowledge it has become a cauldron of contention,” an ASSWO press release comments.
The organization also adds to the mix by ruing that university is “throwing up a host of unnecessary issues” instead of working for the welfare of Sikkim.

ASSWO has its own set of grievances with the university and states that the VC should have understood the human resource requirements of the State and the undergraduate education of students here while deciding on the post-graduate courses offered at the university.
Because traditional courses are not being offered at the MA level, students from this background and wishing to pursue education in these traditional streams have to go to universities outside the State, which not every student can afford, ASSWO states.
It adds, “Sikkim is a state of tourism which is one of the biggest earners for the state, however, Sikkim University has not started Masters degree course in Tourism”.
The organization also has complaints against the administration and states that although the university claims much media credit for declaring results in record time of 20 days, mark-sheets remain unavailable for students even twenty days after the results have been declared, leading ASSWO to remark that the University appears to be more “interested in making news than performing its basic duties”.
ASSWO has also appealed that the VC provide permanent affiliation to Tadong College, the oldest college of Sikkim, pointing out that the temporary affiliation status granted by SU was leading to the college not being able to avail various benefits and funds from the UGC.
The organization has also requested the VC to give affiliation to Kyongsa College.
