NSS trainers coached on Social Harmony and Human Rights

GANGTOK, 14 July: A three-day ‘training of trainers’ for National Service Scheme Programme Officers on “Social Harmony and Human Rights” was inaugurated by the Sports & Youth Affairs Secretary, Karma P Bhutia, today at Paljor Stadium. Forty programme officers from different schools and colleges around the state are attending the training.
The programme has been organized by the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development [RGNIYD], Tamil Nadu, and NSS Regional Centre, Kolkata, in collaboration with the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs.

In his inaugural address, the Secretary mentioned that youth were the future of the society and NSS programme officers could play a vital role to lead them on a productive and healthy path to make Sikkim, India and the world better.
He stressed that the youth should be informed about their duties and responsibilities towards society. In this regard, he urged everyone to deliver their responsibilities towards Sikkim to make it a model state.
“The main problem facing today’s youth is drugs, so programme officers should take this issue very seriously and encourage youth towards productive and healthy options to divert them away from this social menace,” the Secretary said.
Head of the NSS Regional Centre, PK Patnaik, who is also the main resource person for the training, mentioned that the main objective of the NSS was to develop personality for community services. He also detailed the activities and functioning of the NSS.
He informed that the main objective of the training was to train programme officers who will then impart training to their students on these topics. He added that another objective of the training was to create trained cadre to understand these important subjects and to stop violation of the human rights.
Mr Patnaik added that this programme will also help create awareness on the issue and bring everyone on the same platform to solve it.
The programme started with a welcome address by Joint Director, NK Pradhan, who is also the NSS State Liaison Officer, and was also addressed by Deputy Director [Coaching], Thupten Rapgyal.
For the technical sessions, apart from Mr Patnaik, classes will also be taken by lecturers from Sikkim University, advocates and experts from different organization in the state.
