OT collects details on funds for urban development and road projects

GANGTOK, 10 Aug: Rajya Sabha MP, OT Lepcha, has asked the Ministry of Urban Development whether the government proposes to provide a special economic package to North Eastern states, particularly Sikkim, for Urban Development. The ministry has informed that it has no such plans. This, in response to a query posed by the MP in the Rajya Sabha today.

The Ministry has however informed about the support for infrastructural development in urban areas of North Eastern States through various schemes like 10% Lump-sum provision scheme for benefit of North Eastern States including Sikkim; Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission; Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns and North Eastern Region Urban Development Programme.
From Minister, Road Transport and Highways, Mr. Lepcha demanded to know state -wise and year-wise details of the number of road projects funded of the Central Road Fund particularly in backward and rural areas in North Eastern States including Sikkim in each of the last three years and current year.
The minister of Stare in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Jitin Prasad informed that as per the CRF rules works are sanctioned as per the priority of works provided by the respective State Government. Giving out all the details of other states, he informed that two road projects were funded out of the Central Road Fund in Sikkim in 2008-9 amounting to Rs. 2.10 crore, 4 in 2009-10 amounting Rs. 10.32 crore while during 2010-11 and 2011-12 the state did not receive any projects.
Mr. Lepcha further demanded item-wise details of funds provided from Central Road Fund for the development of roads in the various North-Eastern States including Sikkim during each of the last three years and current year, that whether the entire funds have been utilized for the prescribed and targeted schemes, the names of roads development projects for the year 2010-11 and 2011-12 and the time by which these projects are likely to be completed.
The minister responding to the query, gave the details of all the states where he informed that Sikkim was allocated Rs. 2.15 crore for which 2.54 crore was released for the period of 2008-9, during 2009-10, allocation for Sikkim was 2.99 crore for which 3.41 crore was released and during 2010-11 allocation of Rs. 3.48 crore was made and 2.48 crore released. For 2011-12, allocation of Rs. 3.89 crore has been made.
