Pabong-Daring gets the buzz on beekeeping potential

NAMCHI, 03 Aug: Him Tar Farmers Club of South Sikkim organised a daylong awareness cum training programme in beekeeping for farmers at their village today here at Pabong-Daring Government Junior High School premises. The programme was organized with assistance from the Horticulture Department.
Deputy Director, Horticulture, Sonam Bhutia, while addressing the programme, pointed out that Sikkim is on course of becoming an Organic State and stressed that bee-keeping was an important component of organic farming.

He appreciated the work done by the farmers club of Pabong-Daring and assured that the department will extend full support to the farmers undertaking bee keeping. He further said that bee keeping was an easy way to increase household incomes through the honey which could be harvested and sold and also through improved health of various vegetables, fruits and commercial crops which bees pollinate.
The Department of Horticulture has therefore incorporated beekeeping in their development programmes, both for crop pollination and honey production, he added.
The CLC general secretary for Temi-Namphing, Dass Tamang, in turn said that the State Government under the leadership of the Chief Minister had launched several programmes to uplift the farmers but these had to supplemented with the hard work of the people to bear fruit.
He also informed that the Horticulture department, with help of farmer clubs, was working towards converting the Pabong-Daring belt into a beekeeping hub.
The resource person of the programme, Prem Kumar Rai, a beekeeping expert, addressed the technical aspects of beekeeping and detailed the market demand for organic honey.
The programme was also attended by the president, Him Tar Farmers Club, OT Dong, Panchayat Emmanual Tamang and more than 60 farmers.
