8 injured in cylinder blast in Singtam

RANGPO, 15 Sept: Eight people were injured, six of them grievously, when an LPG cylinder exploded in a ration shop at Singtam at around 6 p.m. this evening. The injured were rushed to the Singtam Hospital and six of the more seriously injured have been referred to the Central Referral Hospital in Gangtok.
Sources inform that the accident was triggered by a gas leak. The LPG cylinder was reportedly being used to fuel a petromax during a power cut. The explosion engulfed the entire shop in flames and quick action by firefighters from the Singtam station put it out before could spread further
The six grievously injured are: Rajendra Prasad (65) the proprietor of the shop and his family members Pinky Kumari (28), Basant Pradhan (40), Sumit Kumar (7), Binod Kumar Prasad (40) and Mira Devi (50). Two other family members, Pankaj Prasad (15)and Sova Devi (35) are under treatment at the Singtam district hospital.
Area MLA Am Prasad Sharma, upon learning of the incident, rushed to the spot and visited the injured at the hospital. [from SANJAY AGARWAL]
