Newlyweds killed in Topakhani road mishap

GANGTOK, 11 Sept: A recently wedded couple was killed in a car accident on 10 September, making this the third fatal accident in the past week which. Niranjan Mazumdar, 35, and his wife, Pinky Mazumdar, were killed in the accident which took place at around 1:20 p.m. near Topakhani under Singtam police jurisdiction on 10 September. With their deaths, four lives have been lost on Sikkim road in the past week. The driver, 19-year-old Md. Hussain from Siliguri sustained injuries.
The couple was from Golaghat in Assam and had married just 3 months back. They were on their way to Gangtok from Siliguri on a holiday. According to the police, the driver lost control of the vehicle, a WagonR, WB-74 L 3125, which fell about 100 feet down the road into what was a former dump-yard. Laborers there along with locals rushed to the spot to rescue the injured and rushed them to the Singtam hospital where the couple is informed to have succumbed to their injuries.
The driver was brought to the Central Referral Hospital here and was today referred to Siliguri. The dead body of the deceased was handed over to the brother of Niranjan Mazumdar who works in Siliguri and a vehicle arranged by the Singtam police along with the local drivers to take the body to Siliguri.
