Stakeholders find Katuk Vidhyasagar building too unsafe to continue classes

GANGTOK, 20 Sept: The school staff, ward Panchayat, members of the school managing committee and parents/ guardians of Katuk Vidhyasagar Primary School at Lingdum basti under Martam-Rumtek constituency today declared all the three school buildings [two ekra structures and a newly constructed 4-roomed two-storied RCC building] unsafe for students to return to. These were damage in the Sunday evening earthquake and while schools across the state are closed till Wednesday, at least in this school, classes cannot resume.

Today’s inspection confirmed that the RCC building has tilted too dangerously posing extreme threat to the students, staff and also to passersby. This cannot be allowed to be occupied any more, it was decided.
The inspection team then convened an emergency meeting at the school premises and decided to approach the area MLA, Joint Director [East], Human Resource Development Department, Additional Director, HRDD [BAC, Ranka] and BDO, Ranka to setup a temporary shed on a private land near the school so that students here can continue their studies.
On the request of the people, Bhai Lepcha, a local resident, agreed to hand-over his land to setup this temporary shed. Even the school playground has developed cracks and alternatives are being worked on.
The area MLA, Menlom Lepcha, it is informed, is expected to visit the school on Wednesday.
