Water Conductors bursts above Nandok, pulverises 19 homes

SUBASH RAI
GANGTOK, 19 Sept: The Sunday evening earthquake shook loose a water channel above Nandok running water to the Lagyap hydel project near Ranipool below Gangtok. The gushing water ran down the hill to Nandok about 700 feet below the conductor, gathering devastating force and pushing copious amounts of water into the settlement of 19 homes which fell in its sway. All houses are now too unsafe to live in. No casualties occurred due to the quick thinking and brave response of the people who pulled out neighbours up to waist deep in slush. Even the school campus which they could have used as a temporary shelter was damaged. The people complain that the water conductor running above their village was in a dilapidated condition and that they had requested concerned officials often to have it repaired. This took too long and now 19 houses here are lost.
