Horticulture Inputs and Cash Incentives distributed in Namchi

NAMCHI, 19 Oct: The distribution of Horticulture Inputs and Cash Incentives under Horticulture Mission for North East and Himalayan States to the farmers of South Sikkim was held today at Zilla Panchayat Bhawan, Namchi. Organized by Horticulture and Cash Crops Development Department, Namchi the programme was attended by Minister, Food Security and Agriculture Development Department and Horticulture and Cash Crop Development Department (FS&ADD&HCCD), DN Thakarpa as the chief guest.
In his welcome address, Principal Director, Horticulture South, DK Rai cited in brief the background of the programme held. A brief report of the programme was given by Secretary FS&ADD&HCCDD, Vishal Chauhan who highlighted the advantages of schemes and missions taken in the field of horticulture in Sikkim.
He also informed about the new steps taken by the government to bring improvement in the field of horticulture and agriculture and also about many other good prospects of organic farming and organic products. At the same he also urged the farmers and appealed them to strictly practice organic farming.
The General Secretary and Advisor of Farmers Cell, namely Deepak Gurung and BM Ramudamu also addressed the gathering of farmers wherin they advised the farmers and urged them to practice farming and to help make Sikkim self-reliant, at the same time they also cited the importance of organic farming and the need to do so.
Area MLA, Namchi Singithang, Binod Rai appreciated the work being carried out by the concerned department in improving agriculture and horticulture in the state, and urged the farmers to join hands in making progress in the field of farming by making good use of the opportunity provided by the ruling government.
The chief guest, DN Thakarpa in his address, highlighted the aims and objectives of today’s programme, and informed about various schemes of the government in this field. Giving more emphasis towards organic farming, he cited the reasons behind giving so much importance to organic farming. Meanwhile, he also shared words of encouragement with the progressive farmers who were present in the programme.
Apart from this, he shared a few success stories and gave examples of progress made in the field of horticulture, agriculture, dairy and poultry in the state and also the benefits gained by the people. The token distribution was done by the chief guest and other guests.
Farmers from different areas of South District namely Kholaghari, Pabong, Dong, Samatar, Mellidara, Turuk and Kali Khola which mostly lie in the orange belt participated in the programme. Altogether 74 farmers received cash incentives, while 25 farmers received tokens for Horticulture Inputs like dug-out ponds and water harvesting tanks.
Others present in the programme were Secretary FS&ADD&HCCDD, Vishal Chauhan, District Collector South, AK Singh, General Secretary Farmers Cell, Deepak Gurung, Chairman Tea Board, Gagan Rai, Zilla Upadakshya South, Himal Tamang, along with Panchayat members of South District.
