Governor condoles the passing away of singer Bhupen Hazarika

GANGTOK, 06 Nov: The Governor of Sikkim, Balmiki Prasad Singh has expressed deep condolence over the passing away of legendary singer of international renown, Bhupen Hazarika, in a press release issued by the PRO to the Governor.
According to the release, the Governor said, “My acquaintance with Mr Hazarika goes back to my days as a civil servant in Assam. As a Returning Officer of Lakhimpur district in Assam, I had the pleasure of declaring him elected as Member of Assam Legislative Assembly in 1967. Over the years Bhupenda - as he was popularly called - became a family friend.
After he became President of the Sangeet Natak Academy, our meetings became more frequent and often long. He graced two of my book launch events and sang ‘Ganga Behti Ho Kyun’ to a cheering audience on each occasion. I spoke to him over the telephone some months back and he could narrate past events despite his failing health. It is indeed a personal loss.

His lyrics brought the music of Assam onto the national scene and beyond. He was a versatile genius who wrote and sang not only in Assamese, Bengali, but also in Hindi and English. Creative lyricists and musicians of his stature are seldom born. His death is a great loss not just to Assamese literature and music and to his family members and friends but also to India and the music world itself.
I pray for the departed soul.”
