SPCC West District calls for scrapping of hydel projects in view of recent earthquake

GYALSHING, 11 Nov: The Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee has once more called for hydel projects in the state to be scrapped. At a press conference at Gyalshing on 10 November the party also accused the state government of discrimination in the earthquake relief distribution process.
The press conference was chaired by  Vice President, PK Bhutia along with district president, DB Gurung, and among those present were KB Limboo, and youth of the party.
Calling for the scrapping of power projects the party highlighted such projects to be the main cause of the earthquake of 18 September. The state had been receiving several jolts post the big earthquake and the party claimed that if the projects are not stopped immediately West Sikkim could suffer worse damages than north Sikkim in the event of a future earthquake as it is more heavily populated than North district.
On the distribution of relief compensation to earthquake affected victims the party accused the panchayats of partiality in favour of SDF supporters.
The SDF government was accused of not having distributed uniforms to the primary school students for the current academic session and another issue raised by the party was on the work done under PMGSY. In this regard the SPCC felt that the state government was not serious about PMGSY. As an example the party highlighted that the work of road construction from Guruthang to Arigaon had been started but later stopped after carpeting of just 2 kms.
