Welfare Board under Construction Workers Cess Act meets, passes new welfare schemes

GANGTOK, 14 Nov: The Welfare Board under Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Cess Act, 1996, has passed a set of resolutions aimed at addressing concerns and welfare of labourers employed in Sikkim better.
Four significant points were discussed and passed unanimously at a meeting of Board chaired by the Minister for Labour, Neeru Sewa, here at Hotel Rendezvous on 11 November.
An official communiqué informs that the meeting resolved to organise seminars on a regular basis to generate more awareness among construction workers on their rights and benefits under the said Act.
Also passed at the meeting was the proposal to distribute aid materials to registered labourers in keeping with the seasons. For the approaching winter, for example, the Welfare Board has decided to distribute blankets and hot cases.
The Minister also suggested that a residential school upto class V be set up for children of registered labours. This proposal, it is informed, has not yet been finalised and is subject o a survey to be conducted by the Labour Department.
Among the welfare measures passed by the Board was a marriage assistance to registered labourers of Rs. 7,000 valid for marriage of two children. Funeral expenses of Rs. 5,000, one-time disability grant of Rs. 5,000 and maternity assistance of Rs. 4,000 per child [for up to two children] to registered female workers were also passed by the Board at the meeting.
The meeting was also attended by Secretary, Labour Department, CT Wangdi, and other Board members, it is informed.
