SU Executive Council visit marred by agitating parents and guardians

GANGTOK, 03 June: An effigy of Sikkim University Vice-Chancellor, Prof Mahendra P Lama, was burned by a group of agitated parents and guardians of Sikkim University students in front of a rented building of the University at Saramsa on Saturday evening. The incident took place as some members of the SU Executive Council were inspecting SU buildings.
Earlier in the day, Student’s Union of Sikkim [SUS] members, joined by parents and guardians of students along with members of different organizations, also met the EC members at the Science Block at Gairi Gaon, Tadong, and later submitted their eight-point charter of demand to EC members at the Saramsa building.
An SUS member informed that the EC members have assured to look into the issues raised by them and take it up at the executive council meeting. He informed that the EC members said that the council could not take immediate decision on these matters as the decision will be taken by the VC. However, they assured, it is informed, to discuss the matter with the VC at the meeting.
Likewise, a group of local unemployed youth met the EC members at the SU guest house in Development Area and also submitted a memorandum mainly with two demands this morning. They have demanded the constitution of an executive council enquiry committee on the recruitment [teaching and non-teaching] related irregularities and further demanded to include one member each from SU affiliated colleges in the Executive Council and Academic Council.
It is informed that the EC members assured to look into all related matters seriously. Meanwhile, the VC Prof MP Lama remained absent from the scene.

    1. and yes let this institution of higher learning be a free for all ......even with so many bodies most univs suffer from similar problems like that of SU...just that in most cases its the students themsleves and not the stooges who are out against the administration.

    2. In Newly formed central university VC can easily influence the EC members as there were no other member from the University in that group. In case of SU VC used emergency power to chose and pick faculties in selection processes. In selection processes there was no criteria about academic credentials and the eminent person both in EC and selection didn't raise a voice. The EC is body of frustrated, useful and chamchas nominated by VC only. Scrap EC ........... It doesn't make difference if it is there or not. Where is court in SU? Why VC did not formed court?

    3. what utter rubbish...how can there be no academic criteria when selecting professors or assistant professor .....most of them were not selected -esp the ones already in- based on their performance through the years!!! The ones who raised their voice were the ones who assumed just coz they have been there for three years they are entitled to permanancy, which is flawed coz merit does count, bar two of those, none of the others were good teachers !!!! and of course for the new courses introduced VC did have his agenda for his own people!!!
