It’s 80% average for East Sikkim as well

GANGTOK, 03 Nov: East district kept pace with the rest of the State and posted a handsome voter participation close to 80% for the panchayat polls held here today. As per statistics released by the IPR Department, the Zilla panchayat elections attracted a 78.15% voter turnout while the gram panchayat ward elections received a slightly higher voter participation of 81.62%.
Out of the 32 Zilla panchayat territorial constituencies in the district, 6 were bagged by the SDF uncontested and 26 went to poll today. Meanwhile, of the 290 ward panchayats in East district, 157 saw elections today after SDF had secured 133 uncontested.
There are as many as 214 Independents in the fray for the 157 panchayat ward seats, 35 of which had a three-way contest. The 26 Zilla seats which went to poll today attracted the participation of 48 Independents against SDF candidates.
