South posts 81% voter turnout


NAMCHI, 03 Nov: With 104 [15 Zilla and 99 panchayat wards] of the 299 panchayat berths [28 Zilla and 271 panchayat] wards going to polls today, South Sikkim registered an 81% voter turnout for the two tier panchayats today.

As per the information received from the Control Room, South district, a total of 78% voters cast their votes for the Zilla Territorial Constituencies elections. Of this overall figure, male voter turnout was 80% while the participation of female voters was 77%.
Meanwhile, for the Ward Panchayat elections, the overall turnout was registered here at 82%, of which ml voter turnout was 83% and 81% of the registered female voters in wards which saw elections exercised their franchise.
With this, the fate of 39 candidates contesting for the 15 Zilla Panchayat seats and 232 candidates contesting the 99 ward Panchayats have been sealed in EVMs for South District stored in the strongroom here at the Namchi Senior Secondary School auditorium ground floor.
Despite the pre-poll violence seen in the district, the polling concluded peaceful today. South district had four hyper-sensitive polling stations at Namthang (under Namthang-Rateypani Constituency), Yangyang and Neyabrum (under Rangang-Yangyang Constituency) and Suntaley (under Melli Constituency) and 19 other polling stations marked as sensitive. No untoward incident was reported from any of these or any other part of the district.
