World Tourism Day observed at Tareybhir

NAMCHI, 23 Sept: Sadam Tourism Development Society observed World Tourism Day 2013 under the theme of “Tourism & Water: Protecting our Common Future” today here at Tareybhir premises under Sadam Suntaley, Zilla Panchayat Unit, South Sikkim.
Minister Tourism & Civil Aviation Department, Bhim Dhungel was the chief guest of the programme while Area MLA, Tulshi Devi Rai was the special guest of the programme. The programme was also attended by Chairman Tea Board Gagan Rai, Former Minister DR Basnett, NMC Councilor Tarkeshwar Prasad, Zilla and Ward Panchayats, Officers and students and the local gentry.
Addressing the function chief guest, Minister Bhim Dhungel said that Sikkim has immense potential in the tourism sector with its rich natural beauty and unique climatic zone along with its diverse culture, traditions and customs.
The state government has done a lot of work in developing the tourism sector in the state but the public and youth are yet to fully understand the long term benefits of working in this sector, he said. There might be some flaws in the government’s initiatives but we must come up with innovative ideas and use all the resources available, he added.
The Minister also highlighted about different tourism programmes and projects in South District and also urged the Sadam Tourism Development Society to utilize such infrastructure and take full advantage of the benefits and opportunities provided.
Area MLA, Tulshi Devi Rai in her address said that the programme had been organized to inform people of Sadam and encourage them to work in the tourism sector. The Melli constituency is doing well in many areas and has set an example in the state and country so people of Sadam must have a positive attitude to lead and represent people of Melli in the tourism sector, said Ms Rai.
She also said that the projects of Shakti Sthal and Tarey bhir will provide more opportunities to the people of Sikkim. The MLA further urged all the people not to be misguided and exploited by people with vested interests.
The programme was also addressed by South Sikkim Tourism Development Society (SSTDS) Chairman Gagan Rai and Additional Director (S) Tourism, Anita Rai.
During the programme, Area MLA Tulshi Devi Rai was also felicitated by the Sadam Tourism Development Society which was followed by a beautiful cultural programme presented by students of Taal Musical Academy of Namchi.
