Workshop underway on large cardamom production and post-harvest technology

GANGTOK, 12 Dec: The Nagaland Centre for Human Development & Information Technology [NCHD-IT], Centre, Nagaland in collaboration with Indian Cardamom Research Institute [ICRI], Regional Station, Spices Board, Sikkim is organizing a three-day National Workshop on Large Cardamom Production & Post Harvest Technology here in the ICRI, Spices Board premises, Tadong.
The workshop started on 11 December at CAU, Ranipool and will conclude on 13 December. The programme, sponsored by NABARD, has a total of 25 farmers from Nagaland participating.
The NCHT-IT is a Non-Governmental and Non-Profit Organization. The Centre pursues programmes and interventions, through independent action and networking in the major areas of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial development, communication and information technology, training in social welfare and social development etc. This is for the second time that the NCHD-IT has conducted the workshop here in Sikkim where last year [December] they had organized a workshop on the “Learning Package and Practices on Cardamom”.
Addressing the second day of the workshop, Executive Director for NCHD-IT, Centre, Nagaland, PT Aienla Lemtor, who chaired the function as the chief guest, expressed her happiness at the support extended by ICRI for the workshop.
Speaking on the response of cardamom in Nagaland, Ms Lemtor said, “Over the past 10 years, cardamom is being produced in large quantities in Nagaland. It is more stable than paddy”.
On NCHD-IT, she informed that it intends to promote the role of information technology in human development. “It aims at enabling people to realize their full potential and empower them to execute programmes by thinking together, planning together and acting together”, she said.
She further appealed to Spices Board of Sikkim for continued support and coordination.
Earlier, the function was also addressed by Deputy Director [Research], ICRI, RS, Spices Board, Tadong, Dr. U Gupta where he spoke on the cardamom production technology and future prospects in Nagaland.
Similarly, Dean, CAE & PHT, CAU, Ranipool, Dr. PK Srivastava, NERAMAC, Tadong, PC Roy, and Scientist-D, Plant Pathology ICRI, RS, Spices Board, Tadong, Dr. AK Vijayan also addressed the function.
The function also saw presentations by scientists and interaction with farmers of Nagaland. The Nagaland farmers will be taken on a field visit to ICRI, Research farm at Pangthang on 13 December.
