Handloom weaving training underway in Sakyong-Pentong

GANGTOK, 12 Jan: A 3-month long capacity building training programme on handloom weaving, funded under the Border Area Development Programme sponsored by the Department of Border Management, Ministry of Home Affairs and implemented by the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom, was inaugurated by North Zilla Adhakshya Anguli Lepcha, on 10 Jan at Sakyong-Pentong GPU.
The programme was also attended by Panchayat President, Vice-President, Panchayat  Secretary, other Panchayat members of the GPU, local gentry and public of the area, an official press release informs.
While addressing the gathering, the chief guest stressed on women’s empowerment and the need to become self reliant after this training and assured all support to the trainees should they decide to do so. She also urged trainees to form Self Help Groups upon completion of the training.
Jigme Pintso Bhutia, Assistant Director, DHH, informed the weavers about the different schemes and programmes introduced by the Central government for the benefit of weavers. The Panchayat Secretary, Namdup Lepcha, thanked the department and government for organizing the training for womenfolk of the area. The inaugural session ended with a vote of thanks proposed by Tshering Dorjee Bhutia, Deputy Director (North), DHH.
