KVK-West organizes health checkup for farmers

GANGTOK, 22 Jan: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Gyaba Gyalshing in West Sikkim organized a health awareness and health check up programme at Timborbong West Sikkim for farmers from surrounding areas. The programme was organized under the NABARD sponsored Integrated Tribal Development Project, an official press communiqué informs.
The inaugural function was chaired by UK Sharma, Zilla Panchayat member of Timborbong-Karthok- Tharpu territorial constituency and was also attended by Panchayat Secretary and all members of the GPU, Dr. Laxuman Sharma, Programme Coordinator of KVK, Geyzing, Uttam Saikia, APM, NABARD, Dr. Biren Subba and Roshna Thapa of PHC Soreng, Bhison Pradhan, Rinchen Denzongpa and Tulasha Sharma of KVK, Staff of Soreng PHC and about 80 farmers with their children.
The Panchayat Secretary highlighted the various problems faced by the farmers in the ward while Dr. Biren Subba briefed the gathering on the common diseases prevailing in the villages of Sikkim and called on farmers to come forward to share their health problems during the health check up. He specially focused on mental health and depression among rural youth.
Ms. Thapa of PHC Soreng highlighted diseases caused by lack of hygiene in the village and Mr. Saikia from NABARD spoke on the different schemes offered by NABARD and the importance of Tribal Development Project.
Dr. Sharma of KVK highlighted all the components of project and also briefed on the activities taken up and the future strategies of the tribal development project in the village. Various parameters in Nutrition garden for continuous supply of nutrition to the farm family were also discussed.
The chief guest thanked the KVK fraternity for conducting such a required programme in the village and stressed on the need of reaching health education to all strata of society for society.
Later, a health checkup was organized for about 80 farmers and an awareness programme held for women on childcare. CDPO Soreng Subdivision was resource person for the programme.
