Terrifying weekend for minors reports three incidents of sexual assault

GANGTOK, 31 Mar: The past 48 hours have witnessed three incidents of sexual assault in Sikkim, and in all three incidents, the victims were minors, aged between 6 to 17 years. As is almost always the case with such offences, the accused were known to the victims, even related in one of the cases.
In Kaluk, West Sikkim, two sisters, aged 6 and 11 years, were sexually assaulted by their uncle. The accused, Dadul Sherpa of Upper Bermiok is absconding at present. According to reports, the accused arrived at the house of the girls in an inebriated state at around 8:30 p.m. on 30 March. The mother of the two daughters was attending to household chores in the adjacent room when the accused reportedly attempted to rape the minor girls.
He managed to escape from the house when the mother intervened and attempted to apprehend him. The two minors were sent to the Rinchenpong PHC for medical examination and from there further forwarded to the District Hospital, Gyalshing for further medical opinion.
In another incident, this one reported from Pakyong sub-division, a 14-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by the father of her friend. The accused, Bhakta Bahadur Burathoki, 46, is a resident of Lower Bering, Pakyong. According to reports the 14-year-old victim had gone to meet her friend who is the daughter of the accused in the latter’s house on 29 March.
As it was late she halted there for the night and the alleged sexual assault on her took place at around 2 a.m. in the morning. The accused has been arrested and medical examination of both the victim and the accused has been taken along with their statements.
In another case, 16-year-old driver of 5th Mile Tadong is accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl in his vehicle. The incident took place on the night of 30 March at Gatey Dara under Ranipool police jurisdiction.
The accused was caught by the beat patrol on duty and brought to the Ranipool police station. Later both were sent to the STNM Hospital for medical examination. The accused driver has been forwarded to the juvenile home till 09 April.
In all three cases the accused have been charged under charges of rape and also under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
