Sikkim Newar Guthi holds seminar on Newar language, culture and tradition

GANGTOK, 11 May: Sikkim Newar Guthi organized a state-level seminar on Newar language, culture and tradition here at the conference hall of Tashi Namgyal Senior Secondary School on Saturday. Dean, Sikkim University, Pratap Chandra Pradhan was the chief guest on the occasion.
Renowned writers of Newari language and literature from Sikkim, Nepal, Darjeeling and Dooars were the resource persons on the occasion. The members of all nine zones and branches of the Guthi also participated in the seminar.
General secretary of Sikkim Newar Guthi, Mani Kumar Pradhan informed that this day-long seminar was organized to spread awareness amongst the community youth about the culture, tradition and language of the Newar community. He informed that Newari language is being taught in 13 government schools of the state.
The Guthi is also in talks with the state government and department of Human Resource Development Department (HRDD) to introduce Newari language at the college and university level. “We aim to introduce Newari language as the third language in school syllabus and will soon approach the concerned department and state government after the formation of the new government,” he said.
