Gangtok MLA meets Sports Secretary

GANGTOK, 18 June: The Gangtok MLA, Pintso Chopel Lepcha, today met the Secretary, Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Dr Jaya Kumar who has recently returned to the state cadre from central deputation.
The MLA discussed and inquired about various issues related with sports, programme and policies of the state government and centrally sponsored programmes such as rural talent hunt under the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs.
Mr. Lepcha sought cooperation from the new Sports Secretary to uplift sports in the state and urged the Secretary not to compromise on the quality of works for up-gradation of 250 school grounds and capacity building of young kids in the two state run sports hostels.
He further sought exchange of ideas for spotting talent from rural areas and provision of required infrastructure at the school level at the earliest. There should not be any shortage of funds, for which he extended all possible help in coordinating with the state and central governments.
In response, the Secretary is reported to have assured all possible help for nurturing new talents and searching for more under the State government’s plans and programmes. The department will chalk out annual plans and programmes for promotion of sports in the state, he said further adding that exposure tours would be conducted for students who are already under the state run sports academy.
Dr. Jaya Kumar also informed that the department of Sports and Youth Affairs will call a two-day consultation meet with Physical Instructors and Principals or Headmasters of schools in the state to make sports more viable and part of the education system for nurturing and encouraging the students from very young age.
