Hope and ‘direction’ on Day Against Drugs in Jorethang

GANGTOK, 27 June: Hope Foundation and Drishya Foundation jointly observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit trafficking with an awareness and interactive session with the senior students of Govt Senior Secondary school and general community regarding drug addiction, alcoholism and HIV/ AIDS at Jorethang.
The event started at 11.30 a.m. with a welcome speech by Prem Chettri, Project Manager (Hope-1) and president, Drishya, about drug addiction, alcoholism and HIV/AIDS.
Local youth, anthropoligist Yougan Tamang spoke next, adding an inspirational spin to his talk, and speaking of how he, hailing from a small town like Jorethang, pursued his research with an earnestness which saw him get invited to the International conference for Anthropological and Ethnological Science in England.

Jorethang thana in-charge spoke on the Sikkim Anti-Drugs Act and underlined the need for wider social interventions to address the problem of addiction.
