Sikkim Rehab observes Day Against Drug Abuse

GANGTOK, 26 June: The International Day against Drug abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed here at the Drop-In Centre (DIC) run by Sikkim Rehabilitation & Detoxification Society (SRDS) at Development Area this morning.
This year’s theme being, “A Message of Hope: Drug Use Disorders are Preventable and Treatable,” the SRC members organized a daylong awareness programme sponsored by Sikkim State AIDS Control Society (SSACS). Activities included drawing and quiz competitions for over 50 High Risk Group (HRG) members and Oral Substitute Therapy (OST) staff from SRC at the DIC premises.
Pastor Joseph Tamang, president, SRDS, in his address, highlighted the need to enhance treatment facilities for recovering addicts and alcoholics and spoke about the formation of the rehab, its aims and objectives. Similarly, Rinzing Bhutia, Project manager SRDS-I spoke on the significance of the day’s observance and also about the problems of active addiction in present day society.

Prizes were awarded to winners of the quiz and drawing competitions which was followed by the vote of thanks by SRDC Counselor, Bishal Sharma.
