Stubbing out tobacco

TOBACCO CONTROL CELL UNDERTAKES 3-DAY EXERCISE ON COPT ACT
GANGTOK, 01 June [IPR]: The State Tobacco Control Cell conducted a three-day exercise of enforcement of Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 from 28 to 30 May in shops, restaurants and hotels in and around Gangtok town.
As per a press release issued by Deputy Director (S), Health department, a team from the State Tobacco Control Cell headed by Deputy Director (Sanitation), T Targain and Law Enforcing Officer, State Tobacco Control Cell, R Bhutia conducted the three-day exercise.
The areas covered during the exercises/raids were P.S. Road, SNT Complex, STNM Hospital Areas, Tibet Road, ,Pani House, , Ranipool Bazaar, 5th Mile, 6th Mile, Lumsey, Tashi view point, Bojoghari, Burtuk, various Motor stands, Deorali, Tadong, Vajra, Swastik, Sikkim University areas.
During the raids it was found that most of the Hotels and Restaurants had violated section-4 of the COTP Act 2003. Smoking aids i.e. ashtrays, match box, were found facilitated in the rooms  and  also failed to display “No Smoking” signage as per the specimen i.e. 30x60 cm developed by the department.
Fines were extended to the Managers/Owners for the violations of the Act. Some drivers, tourists, and others found smoking in public places were also fined.
The team also spread awareness about the extension of COTP Act 2003 in the state and urged all to come together to maintain the status of “Smoke Free Sikkim”. The team strives to continue the exercises in other areas to implement the act and maintain the Smoke Free Status.
