West goes all out for environment on WED


GYALSHING, 05 June: Different schools and social organisations of West Sikkim celebrated World Environment Day at venues across the district today.
Hee Yangthang Senior Secondary School under Maneybung Dentam constituency organised a rally to mark the WED. Students marched a 2 kilometer stretch raising slogans to save the environment and raising placards underlining such messages. For the senior students, the school organized an essay competition, while the juniors participated in a sit & draw competition. The students also planted saplings in the school campus. ACF TB Chettri was among the students as chief guest.
At Bermiok Secondary School, a similar rally was held, and a plantation drive undertaken. Former chairperson Phurba Sherpa was present as chief guest.
Gyalshing Girls Senior Secondary School also organised a rally and hosted even more functions to mark World Environment Day. Poetry recitals, essay writing competitions and cultural functions were held at the school.
Meanwhile, the District Administrative Centre, in coordination with West District Zilla Panchayat and Forest Department, organized a marathon from the DAC at Tikjuk to Pelling SSS for primary school children, NGOs, officers and public.
The event started with a brief speech on Environment Day by the DFO (T) following which the West Zilla Upadhyaksha LP Kafley flagged off the marathon.
The marathon was themed “Green Run” and was also participated in by Limca Book Record holder, Amar Subba and local lad, Salgaocar Club footballer Bikash Jairu as a special guests.
Pelling Senior Secondary School carried out a massive cleanliness drive from Pelling to Rabdentse while Lingchom Seconary School held a herbal plantation drive and Kyongsa Girls SSS organized a procession on environment awareness from Kyongsa to Gyalshing Bazar.
Plantation of various host plants at Butterfly Habitat areas along Rimbi-Yuksam belt in West Sikkim by the Butterfly Enthusiasts of Sikkim and Moth of Sikkim was carried out.
Cleanliness drive along the Barsey-Hilley trekking trail, was carried out under the initiative of West Wild Life division involving tourism stake holders, EDCs, Forest Officials, Panchayats and locals.
A plantation drive and awareness programme was also organized at the District Court premises here.
