Yangang signs up for Paryavaran

GANGTOK, 15 June: The Forest, Environment and Wildlife Department, South Sikkim under Yangang Circle, South Sikkim flagged off Paryavaran Mahotsav with a day-long programme at Yangang Bazaar today.
Zilla Adhyaksha, South CL Gurung was present as the chief guest on the occasion. Assistant Conservator of Forest, Ravangla, Kamal Subba, Sub Divisonal Magistrate Yangang, PK Rai, BO Yangang, Jigdal Bhutia, Panchayats, other forest officials, representatives of local NGOs, people of different villages in and around Yangang, representatives of Dans Energy, Jorethang, lANCO, Teesta HEP, SICPA, Rangpo took part in the programme.
Forest officials distributed different saplings of plants to the villagers during the programme which was also funded Dans Energy, Jorethang, lANCO, Teesta HEP, SICPA, Rangpo.
Speaking on the occasion,  Zilla Adhyaksha, CL Gurung said that Sikkim has achieved much success in conservation of forests and protection of green cover in the state. However, he underlined that until we change our mentality we cannot achieve huge success.
“Since 2006, we have planted lakhs of saplings in the state but we have never looked back to check if these plants have survived”, he said. He emphasized in planting more ornamental and flowering plants especially in bazaar areas and road sides.
He also stressed on organizing quiz competitions, painting, debate competitions among the students to raise their awareness level. He also urged NGOs to take up mass awareness on the importance of ecology and environment. Forest officials and panchayats also spoke on the importance of clean and green environment and mass awareness.

The day ended with cleanliness drive at Yangang Bazaar which was participated by all.
