Health Secy convenes meeting to reinforce Sikkim against Encephalitis outbreak

GANGTOK, 23 July [IPR]: In view of the ongoing Encephalitis outbreak in neighboring West Bengal with reports of, now upwards of 105 death, the Director General-cum-Secretary Health chaired a meeting in his office on 22 July to discuss Sikkim’s preparedness and to take necessary steps.
The meeting decided to take the following steps to prevent an Encephalitis outbreak: intensify IEC activities including mosquito control measures; enhance active surveillance of fever cases; correspond with Government of India regarding guidelines on Japanese Encephalitis prevention, diagnosis and management and also details on Japanese Encephalitis vaccination; request Entomological team from the Centre for Entomological survey; seek Diagnostic kit to be made available through GOI; circulate memos to all the Chief Medical Officers regarding Japanese Encephalitis outbreak, preparedness and management.
The STNM Hospital and CRH have been directed to prepare all necessary arrangement for management of Japanese Encephalitis cases as and when needed.
The meeting was attended by Principal Director Health Services-I, Pr. Director Health Services-II, PCC-cum-Medical Superintendent, HoD (Microbiology), SPO (NVBDCP), N.O.(NHM), State Immunization Officer.
