VC seeks govt support in developing Yangang campus, Minister assures all help for Sikkim University

GANGTOK, 02 July: Human Resource Minister RB Subba today assured all logistic support towards the development of the Sikkim University campus at Yangang in South Sikkim. He added that the State Government was closely working with the University.
Minister Subba was addressing the 7th Foundation Day programme of the University hosted here at the Sikkim Government College, Tadong, auditorium.
He said that the Sikkim government was doing its best to provide adequate support and policy interventions for education and human resource sector so that the maximum number of students can pursue higher education within the state.
The government is ready to extend all possible help to the University for early commissioning of infrastructure building at Yangang in south Sikkim.
Addressing the gathering, Sikkim University Vice Chancellor Professor Tanka B. Subba sought cooperation of the State government for early commissioning of infrastructure development at SU’s campus at Yangang. This was necessary for better education facilities with proper class rooms, library and other necessary infrastructure and sanitation for university teaching and non-teaching staff including the students, the VC pointed out. At present, Sikkim University functions out of rented accommodations spread across Gangtok.
He said that University is reeling with shortage of drinking water, space and electricity and also urged the state government to address these issues on priority basis.
He also informed that the University has established a separate Academic Research Award Fund to scholars to provide assistance for research scholars under Sikkim University. He also said that during the current academic year, nearly 13,000 students are getting enrolled in Sikkim University and that this number will cross 22,000 by the next academic year. The need for proper space for teaching and other activities was hence growing urgent, he highlighted.
