Child Rights Commission condemns sexual assault on minor, urges civil society to take initiative

GANGTOK, 20 Aug: Sikkim State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has condemned the sexual assault on a minor in South Sikkim as reported in local newspapers.
In a press release, the Commission has said that it is a matter of great concern and urges all members of civil society to be alert and also to take initiatives by reporting such incidents. It has also urged the police to immediately book the perpetrators under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012 and immediately take the victims for medical examination without delay with the assistance of social workers under the Child Rights Commission.
SCPCR with the help of the local voluntary organisations will conduct more awareness programs and also provide sensitization programmes for the stake holders in the state on the new law 'Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012, the release states.
The Chairperson, Deekila Bhutia has also requested the Police personnel to take assistance of the State Legal Services Authority in providing legal aid facilities and requested the SLSA to provide relief to the victim under the Sikkim Compensation to Victim or his Dependents Scheme 2011.
The SCPCR has further requested the general public to take the assistance of the Commission by reporting any cases of violence against children at 03592-208217 or 8016881868.
