Mangan deliberates on solid waste management


GANGTOK, 02 Aug: A team comprising of the PCCF-cum-Principal Secretary, Forest, Environment & Wildlife Management Department, Principal Scientist, State Pollution Control Board-Sikkim, Additional Project Director, Sikkim Organic Mission, DFO (T) North, DFO, Social Forestry (North), DFO SLNA, Asstt. Env. Engineer, SPCB-Sikkim, ACFs, ROs, BOs along with the District Collector (North), ADC, North, SDM North, the President, Mangan Nagar Panchayat and members and the officials of UD&HD, deliberated thoroughly on the subject of Solid Waste Management of Mangan at District Collectorate, Mangan on 30 August 2014.
The team visited the Solid Waste Disposal yard at Sangkalang Road followed by a visit to the Green Garbage Compost Plant initiated by Mangan Nagar Panchayat. After the visit, a presentation on the Solid Waste Management was made by Asstt. Env. Engineer, SPCB-Sikkim. This was followed by discussion on the matter. The meeting began with an introductionary note by the Principal Scientist, SPCB-Sikkim which thoroughly deliberated on finding out immediate remedial measures to the problems of Solid Waste Management in Mangan.
The PCCF-cum-Principal Secretary opined that there is an urgent need for other project developers to chip-in in the endeavor to solve the problem. The Chief Engineer, NHPC who also was present on the occasion offered to provide necessary help from their side. The meeting also saw the demand of land from Forest Deptt. for the  purpose of proper waste collection yard by the Mangan Nagar Panchayat and District Collectorate.
The PCCF-cum-Principal Secretary, Forest, directed the concerned DFOs to find suitable place only for treatment of dry segregated waste. However, the green waste would be treated by trained Self Help Groups at respective GPU level. The DC, North, was of the impression that once the land is made available by the Forest Deptt. all the problems will be solved and he also was committed to bring out necessary regulations for effective and sustainable solution to the problem. The programme ended with a vote of thanks by the Asstt. Env. Engineer, SPCB-Sikkim.
