GMC seeks more time to prep for highway care

GANGTOK, 04 Jan: The transfer of maintenance and upgradation responsibilities along the 16 km stretch of National Highway 10 [the erstwhile NH 31A] from Ranipool to Tashi View Point from the Border Roads Organisation [BRO] to the Gangtok Municipal Corporation [GMC] might take another two years.
Last year, the BRO had put up a proposal to the State and Central governments requesting for GMC to take up maintenance of the NH 10 falling under its territorial jurisdiction. Subsequently, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had also approved the proposal, a BRO source informs.
However, it is learnt that the GMC has requested for the transfer to be postponed for another two years.
BRO Chief Engineer SS Porwal informs that the BRO had approached the Gangtok Municipal Corporation to take over maintenance and upgradation work along the 16 km stretch from Tashi View Point to Ranipool which falls under GMC. However, he added that the GMC expressed its inability to take over work along this stretch of road for the next two years.
As of now, the BRO is maintaining seven strategically important roads along the international border with China, Bhutan and Nepal.
