SKM challenges renaming of road in West Sikkim

GANGTOK, 09 Jan: Sikkim Krantikari Morcha party has accused the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front of indulging in “petty politics” by renaming the Chakung-Kamling-Khanisherbung road in the name of the Late Arun Rai, an SDF party worker killed in a political clash last year. The road had earlier been named after former Chief Minister, BB Gooroong in 2003.
Questioning the intentions of the SDF government, Upper Tadong MLA, TW Basnett said that the former Chief Minister has contributed a lot to the state and is also the first recipient of the State’s highest civilian award ‘Sikkim Sewa Ratna’  [in 2012]. He argues that there were other roads in Chakung which could have been renamed, but by picking one already named after Mr. Gooroong, SDF was humiliating a veteran politician who is now 90 years old.
The Sikkim Democratic Front meanwhile has welcomed the naming of two roads in West Sikkim [one in the memory of late Arun Rai, and the other in the name of late NK Gurung] in the memory of SDF martyrs killed in political clashes in the run up to the assembly elections last year.
The ruling party is the only one which evaluates and honours the dedication of every party worker rendering service to the party and people at large, the SDF party says in a press release countering the allegations of the opposition party which has opposed the road naming. The Opposition camp is given to negativism and violence, the SDF contends, adding that it was this propensity for violence which had led to two deaths in political clashes in Sikkim last year.
