Teacher transfers required to staff rural schools better and meet humanitarian commitments: CM

GANGTOK, 12 Jan: Chief Minister Pawan Chamling has stated that the recent transfer of around 1,000 teachers in Sikkim was in pursuance of the government policy “of ensuring that most of the excess teachers who are now residing in many of the urban centres are transferred to fill vacancies in the rural schools”.
The explanation, an SDF press release informs, came at the central working committee meeting of the Sikkim Democratic Front chaired by Mr. Chamling in Gangtok on Sunday, 11 Jan.
“This is what the people of Sikkim have voted us into power for,” the release quotes Mr. Chamling as saying. “Hence, this excess/surplus works out to about seven hundred or so. Furthermore, there are many who want to be transferred on various humanitarian grounds and so the total is about one thousand and sixty three,” he said.
Mr. Chamling went on the state that those who are opposing the transfers are at “loggerheads with the pro-poor and pro-people policies of our Government and that these misguided teachers will never succeed”.
“They are also expressing anti-national sentiment when they are saying that they will give up their sovereign rights! This is condemnable. We have nothing to fear as our policy favours our rural schools and the poor who are in need of good teachers and where there is considerable deficit,” the release quotes him as saying. A section of the teachers owing allegiance to Sikkim Teachers Association have demanded that the transfer orders be withdrawn and threatened to surrender their voter cards with the Election Department in protest if their demand is not met. They believe that transfers are part of political victimisation on suspicion of their having supported the Opposition in the recent elections.
The CM meanwhile, called on whom he sees as “misguided teachers” to “reassess their position of saying that these transfers are politically motivated”.
